Woman of Courage: Ruth

We aren’t born courageous. It’s something that happens over time. You must first be tested.

I often find myself saying , “Oh no! I’m not a strong woman. ”  Until I actually look back on where I have been and where I am today.

Have you had struggles that built your character too? Then you know what I’m talking about. If not, you soon will so you must prepare yourself to stand tall and be strong. How do you do that? KNOW your Bible.

Some of the most beautiful women that I draw strenth from are the women of the Bible.  Ruth, Esther, Mary Magdalene. All of them chose to trust God in the toughest days of their lives.

Ruth was a bereaved widow who followed her mother in law to a foreign land. She knew no one. She worked long hours in the fields harvesting barley to feed herself and her mother in law. One day she was noticed by Boaz, the land owner, and he told her to remain in his fields. He warned his men to let her follow the harevesters and not to harm her. When her mother in law instructed her to go down to the field and lay at the feet of Boaz, Ruth obeyed.  This had to be terrifying. She could have been raped and killed by the other men. Instead this set the stage to a second marriage and motherhood.

The story of Ruth is not only beautiful but it shows how courageous she was because of her trust in God.

It would have been easier for Ruth to return home to her own family where she could have been looked after. Instead she chose to follow her mother in law to a foreign land and cared for her doing hard labor. Following God’s plan for you is bravery.

May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Isreal, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.  Ruth 2:12

And now my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All of the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character.  Ruth 3:11

You can read more about Ruth in the Holy Bible. There is also a wonderful movie called The Book of Ruth: Journey of Faith.

Warrior Princess

Hey lovely,

Remember Zena, the Warrior Princess, and how we all aspired to be as strong and as she was?  Oh, if only!

As some of my followers know my word for 2018 is courage. But what is courage? It may look as different to you as it does to me. Dictionary.com describes courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear, bravery.”

Sometimes life comes at you like a raging river. Unexpected events catch us unaware. And sometimes being strong in a crisis is damn hard.

Where do you find your strength when the pressure is on?

I find my strength in my faith. The Bible is filled with encouraging scripture. I hold tight to His promises in the storms of life because I have already tested His promises and found them to be true.

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. *Romans 15:4*

For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope. *Jeremiah 29:11*

The above was my mantra during my scare with cancer and chemotherapy and then again through a divorce.

Recently I  found myself in a difficult situation with a co-worker. There were days that she tried my patience and I bite my tongue. Some days she would keep enticing me. But I  made the choice to be kind and not retaliate in hatred like the world would have me do because I am not of this world.  That’s what love is. Love is patient, love is kind. And if I am a Christian, as I proclaim to be, I must follow the lead of Jesus and live my life as He lived His.f8c397418094d35bf9578b8334059b7c1

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. *Epeshians 4:2*

How do you build your faith so that when trouble comes you can stand firm? Know God. Seek Him. Read your Bible, highlight and study Bible verses ansd memorize them  so that when you need that comfort or strength it can quickly be found. There is a spiritual battle raging all around believers and we must put on the full armor of God.

So many times I have looked back on my life and wondered how I got through. Jesus is my answer. He is my source of strength. Without Him I could NOT have found my courage.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. *2 Corinthians 4:8*

I hope this post somehow touched your life and gave you hope to be strong and courageous.

In love,

Debra

Learning To Be Courageous

Hello darlings!!

Some people make New Year’s resolutions. I choose a word. And this year the Lord put the word COURAGE on my heart. Why a word you might be thinking? Because this is how I stay focused on making changes in my life. It keeps me accountable.

ea905b0d17f184c0b3637a2bb78d4e72

This is only the first quarter of the new year and already I have made a life change. I have worked most of my life in the fashion retail industry. However, earning a living in sales while supporting oneself just wasn’t feasible anymore. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do! Was I terrified to change my direction? You bet I was. But I trusted the Lord’s lead. And although I am still learning new skills and how to deal with some rather unsavory co-workers, I know all things will work out. It’s that inner peace when you know you are doing something right.

Jeremiah 29:11… For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to give you a future and a hope.

I also want to cultivate courage towards my dreams. It’s a little daunting to want something that others don’t believe in or support. Why is that so? I think it is because your confidence level isn’t where it SHOULD be. Every little girl should be told she is beautiful and that she can do ANYTHING she puts her mind to. I really admire my sister for instilling these things in my niece so that she will continue to grow into a strong woman.

God gives us each gifts. We may use them or choose to ignore them. I have embraced the encourager that I am. But is there more for me? I love working one on one with women. Challenging someone to step out of her comfort area with clothes and then watching her admire herself. That is beautiful because she is looking at herself through fresh eyes. This is how Jesus sees us.

I am learning to build my courage via books, Bible verses, quotes and encouragement from friends and family. I recently found this devotional 100 Days to Brave by Annie F. Downs on Amazon. I love devotionals because you can re-read them and still find something that applies to your current situations. I am eagerly anticipating receiving this one! You can purchase this book here Amazon

Another book which I recently purchased after reading a wonderful review is called Real Artists Don’t Starve by Jeff Goins. It is about the misconception of the masses towards artists. For example, it was always understood that Michael Angelo, who was one of the greatest artists to live, was poor. Not so!! He was actually quite wealthy for his time. This book offers encouragement for anyone who longs to step outside the box and live his, or her, dreams. I am starting this one now! Purchase your book here Amazon

This is my year to find bravery, to conquer my fears and doubts and become all that God wants for me.

Do you need a dose of encouragement? Feel free to drop me an email or add a note in the comments section. I would be happy to cheer you on.

Welcome 2018, a year for dreams

IMG_20171229_185827_054.jpg

If we are being honest, we all have goals. Some we jump right into and some we are simply afraid to take.

With a new year ahead comes new dreams. A chance to step outside our comfort zone. To turn new pages.  To begin anew.

I am looking forward to this time.  I am not so much a planner as a happy-go-lucky “come what may” kind of girl.

So what am I looking forward to in the new year? Well obviously to be healthy and loved. We ALL yearn for those things. But I would really like to be more assertive in my life. I don’t want to sit back and watch my life pass me by.  So many others are living their dreams.  I want to live mine as well.

But first I need to go in prayer. God knows me better than I know myself. *You have searched me Lord and you know me. Psalms 139:1*  And He knows what is BEST for me.  I don’t always make the wisest choices.  Sound familiar?

So this year I will take more chances. I will trust the Lord and seek Him first.  And if things fall apart,  I will remember who stands bedside me through it all.

*When I  called,  you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.  Psalm 138:3*

Here’s to another beautiful year ahead.  Sending you love,

Debra
